Today I had a dream with three vivid scenes. In the last scene, I was with a pastor, and for some reason, I looked up. Someone was doing a springboard dive. The person was diving from a very high place, like from the height of a building, but I didn’t think it was weird. I assumed the person was going to dive into a pool. When the person leapt and dived, I even remembered thinking, “Wow, so nice.”
But that feeling turned into shock when I realised the person was coming straight toward the ground. The person landed flat before me. I reached out to the pastor to steady myself, but my body brushed against the body, and I jolted awake.
The dream was so vivid that I asked God what it meant. For this portion of the dream, a real-life story came to mind. Just yesterday, I heard about a young person who seemed to “have it all”, a condominium, a good job, and I was surprised to learn the person was struggling with suicidal thoughts.
“Don’t judge a person by their appearance,” I’ve been telling my daughter these days. I had forgotten how glamorous people can look on the outside, and what people do just to impress others. They often succeed, just like how I was impressed by the dive in the dream. But inside, they may be falling towards death.
The morning I woke up from the dream, I saw this question posed on Instagram by the founder of Project J: What was the last thing God called you to do?
Followed by the Bible Reading, which was on
Live as You Are Called
But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches.
1 Corinthians 7:17 (NKJV)
And when I went to Spotify, a podcast came up top – Jonah: You can run, but you cannot hide.
These past few days, maybe even weeks, I’ve been in a place of despair, disappointment, and discouragement. Just hours before hearing the story I mentioned above, I even felt betrayed by God. After all the callings I thought He gave me, I stepped out… only to fall flat into failure after failure. It made me wonder, why should I step out again? Hence, I felt like a runaway Jonah. Even if I were to do what He put in my heart, I don’t even know what the first step should be. So I stood still. Now I wonder if it’s because I was being patient, or was it the paralysing fear or learned helplessness keeping my wings bound?
Then the above reminded me again: there is a world full of broken people who desperately need to hear God, though they may not look like it from the outside. Will the children of God rise to declare His goodness and grace? Will we tell them that one day there will be no more tears, and what’s coming is glorious?
The Glory of the New Jerusalem
Revelation 21:22-23 (NKJV)
But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.
What about you – what’s the step God has called you to take? Do share in the comments!
