As I worked on the book that aims to summarise the Passion or Holy Week into an abridged version, one thing that struck me was how long Thursday night was for Jesus. His last sleep before His crucifixion on Friday was on Wednesday night.
Before a “big day”, the usual advice is to sleep early and have sufficient rest. Jesus didn’t have the chance to before Good Friday. Instead of resting and sleeping on Thursday night, Jesus had last supper with His disciples, washed their feet, prayed in the Garden of Gethsamane, was arrested, went on trial the whole night and then was nailed on the cross on Friday.
Based on Google AI, “Missing one night of sleep causes immediate cognitive decline, extreme fatigue, moodiness, and impaired judgment, often resulting in microsleeps (seconds-long lapses).”
Jesus was sleep-deprived at the point of the cross. Moreover, he was under stress that came from the trials, mockery and the knowledge of how He was going to die on the cross. In addition, there was the physical pain that came from the slapping, kicking and scourging.
This spoke to me a lot because I treasure sleep a lot. The sleep deprivation of Jesus added another layer of suffering. This was something I had not noticed at first glance.
What about you? Do share in the comments what spoke to you as you meditate on the word and works of Jesus this passion/holy week.
I’d be grateful if you support the work by purchasing a copy of the “Passion Week in 12 Days”. It enables me to keep writing and creating resources that point people to Jesus and His Word. And if this book blesses you, instead of circulating the e-book, buy copies for your family and friends. Thank you!
Here’s Day 1, a sampler of the book.
