Light in Darkness

Light in Darkness

Unfriendly/weird people. Poverty abounds. War raging. Darkness covers the earth and the hearts of people.

Physical injuries. Emotional pain. Cancer diagnosis. Death. Depressive thoughts. Dark clouds surrounded my family recently.

Recently, I felt the depths of this truth in Ecclesiastes 1 – meaningless, meaningless, everything is meaningless.

The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?
Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.

Ecclesiastes 1:1-5 (NIV)

Jesus was at a place of darkness as He prayed at the Garden of Gethsemane. In the darkness of deep sorrow, He prayed and went through it all.

In this darkness, God reminded me about the light in me. No matter how small and flickering the flame might be in each of us, as long as we protect it in our hearts and tenderly care for our hearts, God will reignite and make the flame ablaze with hope and passion again. And then, we will be able to shine as His lights in this world that’s getting darker and darker.

Arise, shine; For your light has come!
And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.

For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;

But the Lord will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.

The Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

Isaiah 60:1-3 (NKJV)

After I drafted this post on 10 July and before this post was published on 11 July, there was darkness and light.

  • darkness – The impending death became death.
  • light – I’ve been getting messages about light.
The first light I saw – Arise and Shine!!
The second ray of light I saw.
The third light. The IG video flashed different messages and the moment I stopped the screen, this showed.

For my devotional this 11 July morning, I asked God for a Word and the moment I flipped open my bible, I saw this passage:

Are you surrounded or even weighed down by darkness? Look to the light, and in no time, you will light up brightly as well.
