Living Water

Living Water

It was the day I was setting up the Shema Rhema booth at the Creative Conference. The weather was scorching hot, and I had worn jeans thinking the booth would be indoors. I was setting up the whole booth on my own, and first time on my own from start to finish. So even though I was thirsty, I was busy rushing to get everything ready before the crowd arrived. When I finished and could finally drink some water, I opened my bag… and to my horror, my water bottle wasn’t there! I always bring my bottle out, but on the one day I really needed it, I didn’t. I was thirsty and sweaty.

I didn’t see any water selling around and also had no bottle to fill up water from the cooler. Some recommended the nearby vending machine and of all the drinks, I chose an energy drink thinking I needed the energy. But the sweetness made my thirst worse! On top of that, we had some drinks and snacks for our tea breaks, and it’s another cup of fruit punch which didn’t help my thirst. The heat was aggravating my situation too.

Hours later, a friend of my booth neighbour (instagram.com/drawmenearerlord) told me she had asked for a word for me from the Lord, which I appreciated it a lot, and she felt this for me, “Be still and know that I’m the Lord. Do not be anxious. Drink from the living waters that flow out / spring out and you’ll never thirst again.”

I felt like the woman at the well.

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

John 4:10, 13-14 (NKJV)

I was so thirsty at that moment, and I told the lady about my situation and she gave a very simple solution, take the paper cup from the catering table and fill up from the water cooler nearby! Now I think of it, I could have drank right from the cooler as well. Perhaps I was so busy and “un-still” in my soul that I couldn’t think straight or of a solution. Sometimes in the thick of our situation, our cognitive can become impaired and we fail to figure an out of box way or even see the simple way out of the maze.

One sip and I immediately felt the heat and the thirst quenched with the icy water.

Somehow it felt like I was made thirsty and then given the water to understand how much more awesome when the spiritual thirst is quenched by the living water.

I went home and read up a little more and realised living water refers to the Holy Spirit! God had been speaking a lot to me about the Holy spirit. That’s why knowing this was a Rhema.

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

John 7:37-39 (NKJV)

I was wondering what to write for this week’s post when the sermon I listened to today by Dr David Jeremiah spoke at length about the living waters. It reminded me of the above incident at the conference. I looked at the title of the video link again, Thirsty Souls. Dr David Jeremiah mentioned how David wrote in Psalm 63 about his thirsty soul. David was in a difficult season, in the wilderness of Judah, living in a dry and barren land.

O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.

Psalms 63:1 (NKJV)

As Dr David Jeremiah pointed out, it’s there that David realised what he needed the most, that only God can satisfy the deepest need of the human heart.

Only the living water can satisfy our thirsty souls.

If you are in the deep valley, pain, or hopelessness today, is the darkness driving you away or towards God for the living water?
