One of the takeaways from my personal retreat was to cut down on the frequency of my writings here from June onwards – from weekly to fortnightly and perhaps to monthly. I had challenged myself to post weekly for a year to train my discipline. My first post was 21 Feb 2024 and as of today (22 May 2025) it’s been 1 year and 3 months.
My spiritual director at the retreat asked what the engagement is like for this website. Like my previous website, it is not as good as I expected, and again, that cast a shadow of doubt on my writings and whether this is really what God has asked me to embark on. Hence, I did a double-take on how much time and effort I have been putting in here, and whether my writings or reflections are truly blessing anyone. It did bless me at least, as I took the opportunity to reflect and organise my thoughts on what God has been speaking into my life.
Another reason to cut down on the postings was because I have been neglecting my other websites which I still have passion for. Lastly, I simply wanted more time and space to breath and rest, no point powering myself into a burnt out.
So I decided to slow down and take a step back until God calls again. It’s not an easy choice because I got so used to the momentum that I actually find it hard to cut back, I am afraid it will be hard for me to pick up the momentum again. But I’m learning it’s okay to retreat sometimes – to ebb and flow with God.
In Lexham English Bible, this is used as the heading for Ecclesiastes 3:1-17: God Has Ordained the Ebb and Flow of Human Activities.
For everything there is an appointed time, a time for every matter under heaven:
Ecclesiastes 3:1,7 (LEB)
a time to tear and a time to sew;
a time to be silent and a time to speak;
Is God asking you to slow down or retreat for now too? “Retreat to Advance“, I saw this quote on Instagram soon after I wrote this post, and it’s so true. It’s like the Chinese saying, “休息是为了走更长的路”, rest is to walk further in the journey.
If my writings have blessed you in any way, please leave a comment or send me a message. It would greatly encourage me to keep writing here. Thank you!
Update:
Interestingly, like a confirmation to slow down, I watched an interview of Ps Kong Hee in the morning this post was published. And he said, “I wouldn’t trust so much in momentum, but I would look for the moment. Momentum without self control is dangerous.” And watching the interview, I became thankful for the years of hiddenness and motherhood. The years, that were taken for me to learn pertinent lessons and heal, gave me the time and space to grow into the person God made me to. What I thought was deferred hope, was His protection.
