Who do you think God is?

Who do you think God is?

In your current season of life, do you see or think God is your Father, healer, peace or much more?

God has different names in the Bible, because one name cannot fully capture His majesty, or express the nuances of our multifaceted God. Thus, the names of God are not contradictions but together give a more complete picture of who God is. Through each name, He reveals a specific dimension of His character and His relationship with His people. The most frequently used name of God is YHWH (Yahweh), mentioned 6,800 times in the Bible (source). This is God’s covenant name, often translated as LORD.

Names carry the weight of identity and purpose, bearing deep significance in our lives. From Abram to Abraham, from Sarai to Sarah, from a fortune-teller’s given name to a baptismal name, a change of name speaks life into a person and can even change destiny. As God reveals Himself uniquely to each person through different names, He also unveils Himself differently to the same person in various seasons of life. He is Jehovah Jireh when we have financial needs, Jehovah Rapha when we are ill, and Jehovah Shalom when we are anxious.

I have been reading “Praying the Names of God” by Ann Spangler, which led me to study one name per week, and there are 26 names of God in the book. It’s really refreshing to read and study about God from the angle of His “different identities”.

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Psalm 20:7 (ESV)

In this season, God has been reminding me to call upon His Name. He spoke through Scriptures, a sermon, a music video, among others. Knowing which name of God to call upon helps me connect with the very aspect of Him I need most, almost like tuning into the right channel of His grace.

Here are some Bible verses where people in the Bible called upon His name for help, intimacy, thanksgiving and salvation.

✝️ Key Old Testament Verses

  • Genesis 4:26b (ESV) – “…people began to call upon the name of the Lord.”
  • Genesis 12:8b (ESV) – “And there he (Abraham) built an altar to the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD”
  • Genesis 26:25a (ESV) – “So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there.”
  • Psalm 50:15 (NKJV) – “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”
  • Psalm 105:1 / 1 Chronicles 16:8 (NKJV) – “Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!”
  • Isaiah 55:6 (NKJV) – “Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.”
  • Joel 2:32a (NKJV) – “And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

✝️ Key New Testament Verses (ESV)

  • Acts 2:21 – “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
  • Romans 10:13 – “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'”
  • 1 Corinthians 1:2b – “…to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:”
  • 2 Timothy 2:22 – “…pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

Which name of God are you calling upon today?

A little testimony time

Sometime in November, God dropped two ideas for what I could write about here — one is about the  Word of God, and the other is about the Names of God (which is this post). Then, in a moment of revelation, I saw how these two topics were linked to the products I felt led to produce for sale at the Christmas markets.

I didn’t start this website to sell merchandise, but one thing led to another, and I wondered why I went through all the trouble to produce those items. So I was in awe at how God connected the dots and revealed some meaning to what I’m doing.

I made these bottles a year ago to bless my community; a little more backstory on how I came up with the idea here. I took time to pray and study about what to include in the bottles. I appreciate someone saw the effort put into those bottles and mentioned it to me at the Christmas market! And another who DM-ed to say how it has blessed her.

It took a few rounds of refinement before it became what it is today. But from the beginning, I knew the bottles would centre around the Names of God, highlighting the ‘relevant’ aspect of Him for different bottles. For example, in the bottle for those feeling anxious, the name of God mentioned is Yahweh Shalom. I hope that through these bottles, those struggling would come to know God better through His name.

If you are interested in buying to bless someone filled with anxieties and worries, or someone dealing with sadness, mark your calendars and visit the Shema Rhema booth at the Christmas market at St Andrew’s Cathedral. I’m also planning to give out some freebies for those who follow Shema Rhema on Telegram, Instagram or Facebook.
