I had an idea to write about the Word of God, partly to draw my focus back to the purpose of Shema Rhema in the midst of merchandise production, which is to Hear the Word (from God). Then, a non-Christian podcast interview with a Singapore Methodist pastor gave me another push to put those thoughts into words.
Question from the podcast (edited for clarity): “Is this really like the word of God, or is it just some guys who at one point wrote down something and said, ‘This is now my teaching. This is the law. You should follow this as a religion.’ Because even before Christianity, many religions were based on testaments created. They were just accepted. Then at one point, this religion started in the written word, then the testaments, and from there, a religion started emerging.”
Years ago, it was ‘The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict’ by Josh McDowell that assured me the Bible’s authenticity with its historical reliability. For example, there are over 5000 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, and no other document of antiquity has such a number and attestations. As for the Old Testament, there is corroboration of archaeological discoveries.
I had wanted to summarise the points of the books in this post, but there were overwhelming pages of text. So it got to be a project another day. But AI did summarise it to a small extent: “The Bible is a genuine set of texts written over many centuries by different authors. Archaeological evidence confirms that many of the places, cultures, and events mentioned in the Bible are historically grounded.” You can also find many articles online, such as How Accurate is the Bible? | Bible.org to read up.
However, some people still doubt the Bible is real because of perceived contradictions and historical gaps. Ironically, some Bible scholars said that contradictions in the different books of the Bible make it feel more authentic. It is far more difficult for multiple authors to produce consistent narratives, despite differences in details, than for one writer to craft a polished narrative. The differences in details signal lived experiences, because they are remembered and retold differently instead of being a colluded recount. For example, eyewitnesses of the same crime scene often don’t give identical accounts, because each person notices different details, interprets through their own perspective, and sometimes even remembers things differently.
Or there could be people who believe that the Bible is real but see it more like another storybook or historical book written by man, and it’s not the Word of God. This is where I believe the grace of God steps in to open our eyes to see the wondrous things from His law (Ps 119:18) and have the confidence as a Christian that His Word is true and amen.
Either way, it means non-believers don’t stand on the Word of God and believe in the authority of the Bible, and so even if they read it, it is more to use the Bible as a moral reference.

Yes that’s the book for me;
I stand alone on the Word of God,
The B-I-B-L-E.
When there are different sources of truth, there are bound to be debates and disagreements on certain issues, such as abortion and same sex marriage. So perhaps sometimes the arguments should start from or be whether His Word has the authority and is established as the foundation of truth before moving on to the issues.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NKJV)
Many scam advisories advise checking the source before trusting or acting on the information to avoid being scammed. So while we should be receptive to different points of view, we need to ensure that we form our point of view from the correct source of truth — sound doctrine and not twisted to our own desires.
The Bible is a sacred text. It has gems of wisdom if we search for them. And I like what Pastor J.John said, “If you want to hear God speaking to you audibly, read the Bible aloud.”
Does your Bible reading habit reflect your beliefs about the Bible?
If you seek her (wisdom) as silver,
Proverbs 2:4-5 (NKJV)
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.

A little testimony time
Sometime in November, God dropped two ideas for what I could write about here — one is about the Word of God (which led to this post), and the other is about the Names of God. Then, in a moment of revelation, I saw how these two topics were linked to the products I felt led to produce for sale at the Christmas markets.
I was in awe at how God connected the dots and revealed some meaning to what I’m doing. Because I didn’t start this website to sell merchandise, but one thing led to another, and I wondered why I went through all the trouble to produce those items. Soon after I received these two revelations, I faced several medical emergencies, which I believe were part of spiritual warfare.
I first printed this t-shirt (photo above) for my husband and myself. Later, I realised it would be meaningful to produce more and sell — because it’s better to have more walking reminders to direct our attention back to God and His Word, than having words around to subtly influence people to be anti-social or offensive.
If you are interested in buying (very limited quantities on hand), mark your calendars and visit the Shema Rhema booth at the Christmas markets in Singapore. In addition to what you see in the online store, a few other items are debuting! I’m planning to give out some freebies too, so follow Shema Rhema on Telegram, Instagram or Facebook.
